Leicester City – The Foxes instantly look weaker heading into the new season, having lost Ademola Lookman who has returned to his parent club Leipzig after a season long loan at the King Power. There is also uncertainty over Goalkeeper and club captain Kasper Schmeichel, who is being linked with a move to Nice. There is also heightened speculation on James Maddison from Newcastle Utd and very recently on highly rated young defender Wesley Fofana from Chelsea. The squad is looking quite thin right now and Brendan Rodgers will no doubt be hoping for a few incomings before the transfer window shuts on the 31st of August.
Liverpool – The Reds have been active very early in the transfer window, with the greatly anticipated signing of the young Uruguayan Striker Darwin Nuñez from S.L. Benfica. He will no doubt add a different dynamic to the Merseyside outfit, being able to run the channels, as well as being more of a threat in the oppositions box given his 6ft 2 standing. It’s the first time in a while that the Reds have had a more traditional No. 9 at their disposal. Klopp’s team have also added the youthful signings of the talented Fabio Carvalho from Fulham, after his current deal expired with the club this summer and also Scotsman Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen, for a relatively cheap fee. They hope to go one better in the Premier League this season, despite losing star forward Sadio Mane to FC Bayern.
Man City – The Citizens have had a squad refresh this summer. There have been lots of outgoings of key squad players as well as academy players seeking first team Premier League football. Four time Premier League winners Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko have left for Chelsea and the latter two to Arsenal respectively. This decision could prove to be costly when you consider the versatility of these players as well as their importance. The signings made include world renowned talent Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, young striker Julian Alvarez from River Plate in Argentina, England international Kalvin Phillips from Leeds Utd and Goalkeeper Stefan Ortega from Bielefeld to replace Zack Steffen, who looked shaky at times last season. There is a lot of potential with the signings but it could take time to adapt to the league as well as the unique style of football that Guardiola likes to play.
Man Utd – How the Devils season might develop is a very interesting conundrum. New manager Erik ten Hag has come into a dressing room which last season was chaotic to say the least. The former Ajax manager needs to put his own stamp on the team and perhaps make some decisions which may seem controversial but are necessary. Cristiano Ronaldo is a high profile problem for the club as it’s evident he wants out due to no Champions League football this season and no guarantee of Silverware. United are in a rebuilding process and they may need to go back a step or two in order to go forwards. 4th spot should be the aim this season but I’m sure most United supporters would most want to see signs of progression and evidence that their club is heading in the right direction. Three signings have been made so far: Christian Eriksen on a free, Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord and Argentine Lisandro Martinez from Ajax. A big season awaits for Erik ten Hag, the Red Devils and their expectant fans.
Newcastle Utd – Could this be the season where Newcastle establish themselves as a top table side or even push for a European spot? Possibly. There will inevitably come a time when Newcastle will finally start competing, just like Man City, due to their new ownership. The players brought in this window make sense and are the type of players which will do well now and help project Newcastle further along. Nick Pope, a proven Premier League shot stopper, with a good reputation, was brought in from Burnley. Young defender Sven Bottman was brought in from Lille as well as Matt Target being signed permanently from Aston Villa for £15 million, addressing the left-back issue at the club. There could yet be further reinforcements with clear interest for Leicester City’s James Maddison. It’s certainly an exciting time to be a Geordie right now.
